By Gary Singer

Let's face it, what we are really after, when we are organizing, is a feeling of well-being and a feeling of being organized. Organizing our lives comes down to basically confronting the elements of our lives. In this article we suggest seven items that can go a great ways into helping us feel more organized:

1. Sometimes the simple action of cleaning up our workspace can make a big difference in our feeling of well-being. You may remember as a child or even as an adult the good feelings that you had after cleaning up the space or putting some sort of organization and to. A few moments spent on this can make a big difference.

2. Getting a head start on your day makes a big difference as well. Sometimes simply getting up an hour early will make one feel like one is getting ahead of things while the rest of the world sleeps. Benjamin Franklin said, " Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise". Give it a try. You might like it.

3. When involved with other people regarding certain projects we can sometimes feel out of control. An excellent way to remedy this is to have a meeting with these folks; either all at one time or individually. These meetings can be therapeutic and help everyone straighten out the bugs and other situations they may be sitting in the way and slowing things down. Sometimes the simple action of conversation among people back and forth can work out confusions and yield a feeling of being on top of the world and being organized.

4. Having goals is important, most of us know that. But goals, alone, are not enough. We need to break those goals into plans and programs and into list of actions that we intend to get done. The programs we create should have times associated with, actually deadlines. If one will take one's goals and work out plans and programs and actions necessary to achieve those goals one will achieve a greater sense of well-being and certainty in achieving those goals.

5. Information on separate pieces of paper or in notebooks can be overwhelming. Most time management experts suggest that data be collected as it occurs throughout the day and placed in one place to be confronted and decided upon at one time during the day. At this time one can take each item collected, one at a time, and either discard or act on it or place it into some sort of the system where they will surely get it done in the future. This action will de-clutter your mind and desk and give you a great feeling of well-being.

6. It is amazing the number of people that operate their days without lists. A list is such a simple item to use. It's a written set of tasks which we need to do; either today or later on in the week or month. With computers, this can be done very efficiently. Using lists in one form or another gets tasks out of our minds which will enhance our feelings well-being and of being organized.

7. Daily planning is, at the root, the best way to get the maximum done during a given day. A daily plan should be made at beginning of the day or the night before. This is the time when one takes one's list decides what one wants to get done and assigns times to it. This is how we work out how we are going get the most done done during the day. Doing this will not only increase our effectiveness but will give us a great sense of well-being.

Perhaps the greatest advantage to a feeling of well-being is its enhancement of our ability to concentrate. Concentration, ie. putting all one's attention on a single item at one time, is the key to effectiveness. Give the above seven items a try and you will likely increase your own well-being and find that your own effectiveness is enhanced.
