Here is something to cheer about

By Perry Lynn

Who hasn't overindulged in a meal and paid the price later? Weather it was pizza with breadsticks at the football game, a celebratory double fudge sundae, or a chili dog with cheese fries at the ballpark. We all have had our moments when the food choices we make might sound so delicious that eyes and stomach overrule the mind and heart, where the mind haven been overridden will only after be heard by the nagging guilt hanging in our head as to the amount of calories just consumed that will raise the numbers on any scale compelling us to lose the moment of joy we once felt.

There are actually healthy gluten-free desserts out there you just have to either make them yourself or have some healthy friends because "healthy" just doesn't seem to fit in the same sentence as desserts for most people. My favorite treat is that which incorporates a little bit of fruit, there are so many wonderful but heavy meals around this time of year that a little fruit adds just the sweetness I need and is quite refreshing.

First rule: you will not eat every crazy thing that floats by you. You will eat a balance of healthy and emotional indulgences- yes that is right I did mention that you can have an indulgence or two, why, because the memories we associate with certain foods this time of year are real and should be enjoyed to a small extent. The comfort in these traditional memorable foods brings us strength, bonding, and the reminder to love more deeply.

There are many medical experts and pharmaceutical companies happy to lend a hand, of course. Prescription drugs that target obesity are one of the top-5 grossing classes of drugs on the market in the United States. According to the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics, Americans are spending more than $25 billion on weight loss medications, and that's not including anything people can get over the counter.

Pineapple anytime of year is a delight to the senses, now think of adding it to your holiday feast by follow this simple recipe: cup of honey, 1 cup warm water, 1 ripe pineapple, peeled, cored, and cut into small pieces, 2tbs. minced fresh gingerroot. Dissolve the honey in warm water and blend with pineapple in a blender until smooth. If you want a more tropical taste add a half of a banana while mixing the pineapple in the blender. Add the minced ginger and blend about 30 seconds more. Then pour into a 9x13 inch pan, put into the freezer. Every hour or so stir mixture, this allows the mixture to freeze uniformly, once frozen scoop into airtight storage container and keep in the freezer until ready to serve. This frozen mixture can then be served with a sparkly Champaign, bubbly clear soda, or by itself.

Making and keep goals might become easier if you as a close friend or family member to help keep you on track; Some extra holiday calories are probably inevitable this time of year but some extra planning will go along way in keeping you in better shape for the New Year.
