Basic History And Benefits Of The Practice Called Massage

By Shane McConnell

Most of us will quickly tell you how a massage benefitted us. However, not many of us know the history of this practice. The general technique of massage has been around for several thousand years. Modern society recognizes about 80 modalities of massage. This practice is often used to rid the body of tension, improve organ functioning, and speed healing due to injury.

Civilizations that existed many years ago, including those in Greece, China, and Mesopotamia, left us images and writings containing reference to massage. In Romania, a unique practice for illness treatment involved a tame bear trodding on a patient, in a form of massage. Contemporary massage clients may not be so receptive to this treatment, though it was effective.

A massage therapist is the current practitioner of massage techniques. This professional must obtain an education in methods such as reflexology, deep tissue, and Shiatsu. Anyone good at this craft is able to use more than one technique and can work with residential consumers, athletes, and in a medical setting. Some practitioners centralize operations in an office, while others visit the location of the commercial or private client.

Massage has many goals, including enhancing relaxation, speeding healing, improving the functioning of the body, and increasing the well-being. Massage therapists commonly use their hands and fingers during delivery. However, depending on the technique, they may also make use of their forearms, feet, elbows, and knees. There are chairs and tables designed for massage and which clothing is removed depends on massage method.

Treatment focus often determines how a massage works. Endorphins and serotonin may be released through activation of our parasympathetic nervous system. Prevention of excessive connective or scar tissue development may increase lymph flow. Sleep is often improved due to the relaxing effect of massage, resulting in less aching and pain. Client symptoms and massage methods used determine additional clinical benefits.
