Calm In the Middle of Chaos

By Hal Neff

On the road of life, many people find themselves in the midst of confusion trying simply to deal with life. Frequently people just go from crisis to crisis whether it's with health or monetary and never seem get on top of their challenges. They allow their outer circumstances determine all aspects of their life.

Yet, life is more than your problem. It's much more than the total of all the negative things that might face you. If you aren't personally dealing with an imminent crisis in your life, you definitely know of people within your circle that happen to be. Life can be filled with a long list of issues and chaos often seems inescapable.

Despite all the challenges, it is important to get a grip on how to stay relaxed since not finding that calm in the middle of the storm can have a huge effect in your life in terms of your own psychological and physical health. So what precisely could you do to lessen the effects of the "storms" which are bound to be everywhere.

Whenever you switch on the News today the only thing you will hear is bad news. Bad news sells, yet hearing the bad news does little to better anybody's life. It could be a great deal better to do some positive mental growth first thing in the morning rather than taking that newspaper to see who had been shot, killed or maimed.

Avoiding putting this negative pictures in your head and replacing positive thoughts and images can provide you with that whole different point of view on life. Begin by building up a positive inner voice that can help you develop into "others" centered rather than self absorbed. This on its own can transform your whole outlook on life. It is this that help you create a calm demeanor even when you may find yourself in the midst of a storm personally.

The 17th Century clergyman, Matthew Henry said, "After the storm comes the calm". Have you ever noticed how calm it can be after a violent storm? That may also be true in the middle of the eye of a storm. I personally remember being in the middle of a violent tropical storm just north of the equator in Africa. It was a massive tropical thunderstorm which ripped roofs of many of the houses. Yet, as the eye of the storm moved directly over where I was, it was incredibly calm. In fact there was a "stillness" in the air which I never have encountered since. It's that kind of calm that we need to get into our lives.

To get this kind of calm requires you to be vigilant about the input that goes into your thoughts. It's best to avoid as much of the negative around you as possible. If your input is extremely good, you'll most likely have a greater ability to stay calm in spite of the storm. This will not only help you in keeping better health physically but it will also help you in your own mental health giving you a genuine clarity of mind.

During these busy times, life can seemingly bring a great deal of confusion. Developing a calm mind will be what helps you make it through the storm.
