The Plus Side Of Preschool For Kids

By Bertha Wells

There are many benefits associated with attending preschool, at least at the age of four, for young children. It gives a young child his or her first learning experience in a structured and nurturing environment, and its benefits can not be overstated. They include an environment that provides children with social interaction, opportunities to share, elementary learning concepts, structure, temporary separation from one's parents, and the chance to work on creative projects and activities. Each of these will be discussed in greater detail below.

To begin, nursery school is often the first chance that a small child has to socialize with a big group of children who are the same age. Most pre-k classes incorporate a lot of opportunities for children to play freely into their daily schedules, as playing freely is said by many studies to have solid benefits for youngsters. Free play fine tunes kids' motor skills and allows children the chance to work in teams.

Opportunities to share also abound in a pre-k environment. Very young children, even those with at least one sibling, may not want to share toys and other items at home, and in preschool sharing is strongly encouraged. The sharing is a life skill that promotes empathy and generosity, and it is something preschool teachers look to instill in their students each day.

Elementary learning concepts are instilled in children in pre-k today as well. A nursery school environment, particularly one tailored to four year olds who will be entering kindergarten the next school year, is no longer just about play. In many cases, children are learning basic numerical and phonics skills which will prepare them to learn basic math and to read. They are also receiving homework on at least a weekly basis as well.

In preschool, kids are placed in an environment with structure which will be helpful as they get older. To provide an example of this, they will have playtime, work time, snack time, etc. At different points during the day. Having the same schedule each day is critical for young children, and such structure will be ever the more beneficial when the preschoolers enter later grades in school.

Being apart from parents is yet another benefit of going to pre-k for a child. It is many times the first chance that a child has a prolonged opportunity to be away from parents and in an environment when he or she can socialize, learn, and play with his or her peers.

The chance to work on creative projects and activities is yet another benefit of nursery school. Children tend to work on many arts and crafts projects which enhance their creativity and decorate the walls of their parents and grandparents at home.

There are many pluses that are linked to young children's going to preschool. Some are the chance to be social with peers, to share items with others, to learn basic phonics and numerical skills, to be in a structured learning environment, and the to work on various arts and crafts activities.
