Facts Regarding How To Join The Military

By Audrey McGuire

Serving in the military is widely considered a rewarding experience. It gives people the chance to protect and honor a country that they call home. Those who have been involved talk about the knowledge and irreplaceable experiences they have received from military service. People interested in how to join the military should know a few things.

There are varying rules and requirements when it comes to enlisting. These differ by the branch and the country. Typically, forces are searching for people who are 18 to 30 years old and in good health. Exceptions may be made for younger or older applicants.

The initial step that should be taken in this process is figuring out the branch to join. Some find it difficult to choose, but recruiters are available to help. Individuals may follow the lead of their ancestors who served in a specific branch. Usually the choice is made based on the interest of the individual. That is, a person who enjoys water might choose to go into the Navy or be a Coast Guard. Speaking with recruiters in different branches can also be beneficial.

Involvement in this is a big commitment. The enlisted must serve a set time. Most contracts are for an eight-year period, which many people serve half active and half inactive. Keep in mind that the recruiter has a job to get people signed up and are not always looking out for your best interest. People should feel confident in their choice and not feel pressured to enlist.

They should also know how they want to be involved. Some do this full time. Others have different future plans and prefer part-time work on a short-term basis.

Once the contracts have been signed, basic training or boot camp must be completed. This step in the process is known for being mentally and physically draining. People who pass this test can move forward and begin their work. Overall, being involved in this is rewarding. People are paid well, receive benefits and are appreciated by the general population for their service.

This situation is not ideal for every person. However, people who get involved learn to be leaders, disciplined and strong. People on active duty may have to move a lot or live in different countries or states, away from loved ones. Sometimes this separation is for months or years. These forces are expected to protect the population, especially during war time. The reality is that individuals may be sent to battle and be forced to kill other people.

A lot of individuals show support for the country that they live in by enlisting in its military forces. In the time they spend in service, they gain important skills and learn new things. People who are enlisted should be physically and mentally strong because there are many tasks involved. Interested individuals are encouraged to speak with recruiters and research how to join the military.
